Jackson Wills

PhD Student

I am from Salt Lake City, Utah. I went to Gonzaga University from 2016-2020 for a BS in mechanical engineering. I started my PhD at UMN in 2020 in mechanical engineering. My research interests are generally in modeling, control and optimization of systems with high potential for positive impact. I am working on the Hybrid Hydraulic Electric Architecture (HHEA) in its application to the electrification of off-highway vehicles (i.e. large construction and agricultural machines). Electrification plus increased efficiency would result in significantly reduced carbon emissions; however the design must also be cheap enough to be economically feasible to consumers. I also am working on the development, modeling, and control of new power take-offs (PTOs) for wave energy converters. The HHEA can be used as a PTO and could be a cheap yet efficient option for wave energy converters, potentially aiding in the quest for harnessing ocean wave energy on a large scale.

I enjoy playing soccer, reading, and being outside.
